Very lovely decorative French locket with an aged photograph of a mustachioed soldier under a thin glass facing.
Dating from the early 1900's this type of photo locket was very popular in France, particularly as mourning jewellery, as this quite likely is.
The lightweight decorative edge, with it's shaped metal ribbon, is a little darker than the brass central locket part and may well be made out of pressed tin.
There is no attachment at the back, but knotted to the top is a faded and worn scrap of tricolore fabric ribbon with what would originally have been the colours of the French flag, which may have been used to fasten the brooch to clothing. This man was clearly someone's hero!
