This listing is for one block of vintage Marseille pure soap block. Made from 72% pure oil and richly coloured, these soaps vary from deep ochre to warm nutmeg in colour.
These soaps originate from the Marseille area of France, where soap-making has been an artisan production for hundreds of years. The largest of the blocks measure approx 3" (7.5cm) on each side and all of the blocks are hand stamped with the maker's marks.
Beautifully misshapen and ancient, these soaps look wonderful displayed in the kitchen or bathroom.
Marseille soap or Savon de Marseille is a traditional high quality French soap made from vegetable oils that has been produced in the Marseille region for about 600 years.
It is still made today and sometimes blended with other oils and fragrances. These cubes are not from the 17th century but probably date from the 1940's. A bit knocked about, a little out of shape, a bit discoloured in places and somewhat diminished: although their original weight is stamped on one side, each block weighs less than that now as they have dried out a little over the years.
Perfect to add a pretty and authentic French accent to your bathroom or kitchen in a vintage soap dish. Your purchase will be carefully wrapped in plastic-free packaging, ready for gifting.
